there was a time before paris. and a city called new york.
just a few years ago the DFA label started to release music that revolutionized modern dance music. lcd soundsystem, juan maclean, hot chip .. just to name a few of them marked the change from conclusive minimal music back to mostly live played instruments combined with soundsystems and new technologies.
after struggling with some projects that didnt really worked it out like princehorn dance school, they are back with the astonishing hercules and love affair.







hercules and love affair will make you think that 70's disco funk never happened. ever. its a
groundbreaking new project from andrew butler (->well-known nyc resident and dfa mate) and tim goldsworthy (->originally a drummer for U.N.K.L.E., Goldsworthy co-founded james lavelle's mo' wax label. he later worked with james murphy, being part of lcd soundsystem and is joint owner of DFA records).

the sound of hercules and love affair expertly combines elements of classic house & acid with new york's current (and everlasting) love of all things disco for two tracks that meet somewhere in the middle.

This is the first look of the Nike Court Force Low “The Night of Sevens” which is inspired by one of the Chinese Traditional Festival.

Qi Xi ( literally “The Night of Sevens”), sometimes called Chinese Valentine’s Day or Magpie Festival, falls on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month on the Chinese calendar; thus its name. Young girls traditionally demonstrate their domestic arts, especially melon carving (!!!), on this day and make wishes for a good husband. weird stuff.
The shoe features patent leather on the toe cap, ice-sole and some Chinese characters on the tag of shoe tongues.
No release date at the moment, so be patient .

>>CARIBOU

Caribou is Dan Snaith of Ontario, a math wiz and accomplished musician who has been developing his own unique brand of electronica since 2000. Andorra, his latest release and first under Merge Records, has been receiving high marks from great sources since August of this year.



Snaith previously recorded under the stage name Manitoba, but changed it in 2004 under threat of an American lawsuit by Richard "Handsome Dick" Manitoba , who had never actually released music under the 'Manitoba' moniker. As Snaith himself commented, "It's like The Smiths suing John Smith or something".
Uninterested in and unable to afford the contest, Snaith opted to rename his project.
Snaith is quoted as saying that he chose the name "Caribou" while on an LSD trip with friends in the Canadian wilderness.



Snaith usually performs with a live band when playing gigs, often assuming the role of percussionist (as well as electronic composition, he is an extremely accomplished drummer). Sets also often include complex video projections on a large screen, a DVD of which was released in November 2005.



"In music I will have an idea to put some different sounds together or a melody that meshes with a chord sequence or a sonic mood," said Snaith in an interview. "I'm not the type of person who takes physical things apart and plays around with them, but I like taking mental ideas apart and playing around with them. That's what appeals to me about what I've spent my life doing."
Considered by many to be his strongest album yet, it is packed full with lush, psychedelic electronica with 60's-inspired vocals and truly mesmerizing production.

Goldfrapp have made a return to the dreamy, understated sound of their Mercury-nominated debut with the forthcoming studio album, Seventh Tree.

Written and produced by Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory, the duo’s fourth studio album is a key release on Mute’s 2008 quarter one schedule. The label will be looking to capitalise on the commercial headway the group made with 2005’s upbeat, disco-inspired Supernature album, which has sold more than 1m copies worldwide and is their biggest-selling album.
Mute marketing manager Dave Chase says they have high hopes for the set. “We are all amazingly pleased with the album and believe it is going to open up a lot of new doors for Goldfrapp,” he says.
Scheduled for release on February 25 2008, the album will be the subject of an upfront online campaign starting in December, which will introduce the record to Goldfrapp’s fanbase. “We’re going to be concentrating a lot of our efforts online because it’s the type of record that lends itself to a certain degree of discovery and word-of-mouth,” adds Chase. The album will be preceded by the single AandE on February 12

Turzi lives and works in Paris / France

In his studio he records a series of musical flashes laconically swaying from performed music to electronic music. These long lists of sonic impressions reveal an audio guide to Turzi's introspective journeys. Narcotic and cinematic, they are devoted to mind elevation and expansion of the human soul. A selection of these work sessions is available on EP "Made under Authority" released by Record Makers in October 2005. Thanks to band REICH IV (from Steve Reich's "IV Organs") Turzi is able to bring "Made Under Authority" sweet hypnosis alive and on stage . Often drifting towards atmospheric violence and neurotic tension. Rhythmic section is tight and disciplined. Executing a subversive music score. Turzi's performances have been described as disciplinary rock.

The Oya Festival took place between the 7th and 11th August in Oslo's medieval parc, daytime rock-festival joys giving way to a plethora of inventive night-time activity courtesy of Oslo's independent promoters.
Kosmische club played host to Sonic Boom (Spacemen 3)'s SPECTRUM project, combining vintage analogue electronics and myriad sounds coaxed from an array of mini keyboards and circuit bent toys. Opening with an oblique homage to Kraftwerk's 'Hall of Mirrors', before drifting into almost vintage Spacemen 3 territory, the droning half-light broken by pulsing neon-bursts of electronics, bathing Pete Kember's warm tones in a aquatic blue glow. The daytime festival on Saturday was opened by Norwegian chanteuse Hanne Hukkelberg, whose haunting songs, orchestrated with glass celeste, sonic-bicycle wheels, harmonium amongst other exotic instrumentation, tug at the heartstrings while moving to increasingly oblique time-signatures.

Closing the Saturday night was Salvatore, whose motorik autobahn-rock moves to a more singular rhythm, colliding unstoppable Neu! propulsion with dub effects, cinematic crescendos and shards of astringent electronica.

Moving to Leeds in the late eighties, Ralph Lawson must have had second thoughts about the place with it's gothic buildings and beer n brawling attitude alongside it's dormant club culture. The fact that his favourite bands came from the city may just have tipped the balance, and a generation of clubbers can be thankful of that fact.

Ralph holds the honour of playing the first ever record at Back to Basics, and there is a very good chance that he will play the last if that fateful day ever rears up it's ugly head. Resident dj for 9 glorious years now, the success and vibe of Leeds' best ever club may be just one factor that has prevented Ralph from being mentioned in the same breath as some of the big-money djs of today. That he has not got a single commercial bone in his body is another. Preferring to play one set per night in a club in order to give that club his all, Ralph was never going to get the same national exposure as those other djs. But Ralph is no other dj. Don't ask us, ask Bill Brewster who recently described Lawson as Britain's best kept secret.

As more top US and European djs came to Leeds and witnessed Ralph's smooth-as-a-baby's-bum style, so the requests flooded in from abroad for his deck services. Ralph has played at just about every good club under the sun, and he would probably agree that the highlight of his career was playing to 20,000 people on Bondi Beach on Millenium Eve. He is also surely one of the few foreign djs to have made it in Moscow, a special night that was commemorated by the release of a cd recorded live on the night by Barcelonan label, Minifunk. Not bad for one who has been unnecessarily tarnished with the rather restrictive title of "deep house dj" for some years now.

Never one for resting on his laurels, Ralph has always kept a healthy interest in making music and, as an ex-drummer, was always destined to progress onto studio work. With Carl Finlow, and occasionally Huggy, Ralph has been responsible for a number of highly rated productions.. Most notably, Ralph collaborated with Chez Damier and Stacey Pullen early in his career, which must have had a profound effect on the way he approached production. With Carl, Ralph has recorded as Wolf n Flow and Urban Farmers.

2020 Vision, Ralph's record label, has been going for five years now. To quote Carl Finlow,
" 2020 has grown up and is no longer a baby. It has just started school, and has made some great new friends. Each day it learns more and more and always tries to do it's homework. If it continues as it is doing, it will mature into one of the schools very brightest pupils."
With an ever increasing roster of artists from as far afield as Montreal and Helsinki, Avignon to Manchester, what started out for Ralph as a hobby is fast becoming an international enterprise of some repute.

Not satisfied with making his own music and releasing the music new artists, Ralph has earned himself a significant niche as a remixer. As always with Carl, Ralph has famously remixed artists that include Felix Tha Housekatt, David Bowie, Blaze, Jori Hulkkonen, Shawn Christopher and many more.

Now a regular guest at places like Fabric, Bugged Out and Home, and with his productions and remixes appearing regularly in the playlists of today's top djs, the sky is the limit for this most talented of people. But maybe even that is not beyond Ralph's capabilities.
